The enduring reputation of English cabinet making is based on the retained comprehension of the characteristics of timber that arose from the pooled knowledge of the woodman, the shipwright and the carpenter. The English tradition is based on making full use of natural qualities of the timber. Whilst at times English makers have been influenced strongly by mainland European trends in particular on the return of the court of Charles II and by Oriental travel, the fundamentals of English furniture remain based in the quality of the material. This approach was reinforced by the establishment and development of the Arts and Craft movement and its close relation Art Nouveau. Interestingly it is also a tradition that has been exported and can still be seen in the furniture of New England. In the late 19th Century certain makers such as Gimson and the Barnsleys took this understanding, combined it with exceptional design and achieved new levels of elegance and refinement.
In the 21st Century Timothy Mark are doing nothing radical, we are simply developing this tradition. By understanding our materials, designing to the highest standards and taking enormous care with the object of creating pieces of profound beauty. The resulting style is by degrees contemporary yet with a traditional quality. The feel will vary according to detail and whilst there is no absolute approach we label the two ends of the spectrum as Classic and Modern. Timothy Mark offer an individual design service which enables the creation of the finest individual pieces.
