There is no rocket science involved in maintaining quality furniture - it has been done successfully for centuries - but there are some sensible guidelines. Importantly any piece should be kept in stable conditions that are not too dry or humid - wood will expand or contract according to moisture content and generally in a domestic environment will dry over time. Rapid drying - normally caused by air conditioning or central heating can lead to splitting of panels. So the general rules are:
- Keep furniture away from radiators and other heat sources.
- Provide a moisture source in the room (bowl of water).
- Avoid prolonged exposure to damp.
- Don't drop from height or use as work bench.
Refinishing and polishing depends on the individual finish. In the case of oil and wax it is fairly simple - use a beeswax cream sparingly and only when you feel that it is needed.
